American Stories




A number of American English words ending "ize" can be spelled as "ize" or "ise" in British English. Some words in American English are very different in spelling from those in British English. Below are some examples.







Example 1: REALIZE, REALISE
To understand something.

UK: I realise that there are many lorries on the motorway.
US: He realizes that there are many trucks on the freeway.

Is the following British or American? (answer below)

1.   The student realized that she was in trouble.


Example 2: COLORIZE, COLOURISE
Adding colour to black and white movies, paintings or photographs.

UK: Ted Turner has just colourised my favourite movie.
US: Jane Fonda likes movies that are colorized.

2.   Tom can colourise your grandmother's photograph.


Example 3: PARALYZE, PARALYSE
The state of being unable to move.

UK: The traffic on the motorway was paralysed.
US: The traffic on the freeway was paralyzed.

3.   An accident can leave you paralyzed.


Example 4: TIRE, TYRE
The rubber wheel covering on a car.

UK: I tried to visit you, but my tyre had a puncture.
US: I tried to visit you, but my tire was flat.

4.   Four tires are essential for every car.


Example 5: PROGRAM, PROGRAMME
A listing of the order of events for an event.

UK: I have the programme for tonight's play.
US: I bought the program for the baseball game.

5.   "Get your programs here, five dollars!"


Example 6: PAJAMAS, PYJAMAS
Lose fitting clothes for sleeping.

UK: There is a picture of Prince Charles in his pyjamas in the newspaper.
US: President Reagan had horses on his pajamas.

6.   Silk pajamas are very expensive.
