Words created by error - approximately 300-400 words in the English language have been created by a typographical error or mishearing. Below are some examples.

A slit in a garment used to hold and fasten a button.
Buttonhole is a mishearing of the old term "buttonhold."
Sweetheart
A person for which another feels great affection.
Sweetheart is a misrendering (bad written translation) of the old term "sweetard." (as in dullard)
Asparagus
A small edible green vegetable
Asparagus is a mishearing of the old term "sparrow-grass."
