Etymology: a branch of linguistics that studies the origins of words or expressions



Words borrowed from other languages - English is not shy about borrowing words from other languages.


Bankrupt

To be completely without money or unable to pay one's debts.

EXAMPLE: The man was bankrupt. Alone and broke, he decided to beg for money.

This comes from an Italian expression, "banca rotta," or broken bench.




Breeze

A light air current

EXAMPLE: Melvin felt the breeze move through his hair.

This is taken from the Spanish word "briza."




Quiet

Making little noise

EXAMPLE: The girl was so quiet that we did not know she was in the room.

"Quiet" is taken from the Latin word "quietus."
