A very famous subject at Harvard University is “happiness”. I read one of their books, “The Real Happiness” over three years ago. There was a key behaviour the book mentioned that would lead you to real happiness. It was to write down five sentences each day about what you were grateful for on that day. The book explained the reasons and gave examples as well.
I had no idea if these simple five sentences would bring me happiness or if there were things to be thankful for on a common routine day. But since I did believe in Harvard University’s research, I decided to give it a try. I told my husband my decision, and he doubted that this practice would change my behaviour.
Fortunately, I have written five gratitude sentences every day for two years now and it has become part of my daily routine. My attitude to life has permanently changed. I used to be a bit pessimistic. However, after a while of writing down five gratitude sentences every day, I figured out the optimistic side of myself and proved to my husband that this practice works. So many times, I found five sentences were not enough to give the appreciation of what happened on that day.
This habit does not only benefit me, but my child as well. As a parent rearing a child, I know how to lead her to see the beautiful seeds hidden under the ground which let us cross over those negative barriers and even welcome them.
When I express gratitude, it is life changing. A small behavior change is lighting my whole life and giving me happiness.
