spilled basket of veggies

I was born in a village area. From my childhood I saw how my grandparents, parents and neighbours were growing their gardens. Near almost every people’s habitats was around 1 acre of land, so people can grow a different vegetables and fruits for own consumption. The part of this land they use to grow a feed for animals like corn or different green plants or grasses. The main vegetables I have grown were cucumbers, tomatoes, pepper, peas, carrots, onions, garlic eggplant and herbs like dill parsley, spinach and others. There were many fruit trees near my house like apple, pear, plum, apricot and cherries. And many berries such as strawberry, raspberry, gooseberry, black and red currant, etc.

From my previous description, you can imagine how I like village and growing process. I think it’s into my blood. My process of growing vegetables start from preparing of soil there we use compost container where we put leftovers from vegetables, combining it with soil and small branches. Usually, I do it in autumn and lasts until spring. It is enough time to get the soil enriching the nutrients and useful elements. I use this compost for my small greenhouse.

Then I buy the seeds I need in the shop and plant it. For greenhouse, I use containers and the top I wrap the plastic. It create the extra heat and moisture. This method accelerates plant growth. When the weather allows, I bring the container and pick it up back in the evening. Then, when the plants are big enough I replant them into the open ground. Before I added the compost soil to the main ground. Every day I water them using drip irrigation. This way of irrigation is the best for plants. Also I cover the place between plants with mown grass. It protects the roots and conserves the moisture in the ground. We tie tomatoes on high sticks and cut off lower leaves. It helps to avoid plant disease. Extra we cut off new shoots because the plant needs a force to grow and give us harvest. For cucumbers we use a net. This way gives us extra space and the plants are better pollinated.

This season we are growing green onion, garlic, dill, mint, melisse, tomatoes, cucumbers radish and carrots. Also, we have six bushes of strawberry but the squirrels ate our crops or damaged them.
