Education

The education process in Iraq is managed through the Iraqi Ministry of Education, and according to the UNESCO report, in the period before the first Gulf War in 1999, Iraq had an educational system that was considered one of the best education systems in the region. But education suffered a lot because of the wars, siege and staunchness that Iraq was subjected to insecurity.

Education in Iraq is compulsory until the completion of the primary stage. The state guarantees the right to free education at all levels - primary, intermediate, secondary, and university - for all citizens.

The official educational cycle in Iraq extends to 12 years, of which 6 years are compulsory for the primary stage, which starts at the age of six years, followed by 3 years for the intermediate stage, and then 3 years for the secondary education stage, which is divided into the scientific or literary general secondary. There is also an institute for teachers and the duration of study is 5 years after intermediate education.

Middle school students receive weekly classroom lessons that include Islamic education, Arabic language, English, science (physics, chemistry and biology), history, geography, sociology, mathematics, art education, and physical education. Some optional subjects are added in the preparatory stage, such as the Kurdish language, sociology, economics, and civic education.

Studying for a Bachelor's degree in Iraq usually takes 4 years. However, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry take 5 years, while human medicine takes 6 years to complete. A Master's degree requires additional 2 to 3 years of study, and a Doctorate degree requires 3 to 8 years.
