Sports in my native country, Eritrea, are primarily soccer, cycling, and long-distance running. Soccer is popular in Eritrea; however, Eritrea is best known on the international stage for cycling. Cycling has a long tradition in Eritrea. The Tour Eritrea, a multi-stage cycling event, is held annually. The national cycling team of both men and women is ranked first on the African continent. Eritrean cyclists became the first African riders to compete in the Tour de France. Eventually, history was made. At the 2024 Tour de France, a young Eritrean boy won three medals and became the first African green jersey winner.
