Settlement

I came to Canada in 2016 and so many things have changed in my life since then. Before that, life was hard. I left Syria for good at the end of 2014 with my wife and children because of the war in my country. We went to Lebanon to find safety with a relative. UNICEF was responsible for us, and they gave us food cards, money and clothes. The United Nations protected us. However, there were terrorists in Lebanon so we moved to another city where I found some work. We were hoping to leave to go live in Turkey. The plan was to then emigrate to Europe. Things were desperate.

Then a miracle happened. I got a call from the United Nations. They asked me if our family wanted to move overseas. They offered me a choice of three countries to move to. We chose Canada. I knew nothing about it but I thought it was the best choice. We left immediately. We had never been on a plane before and we felt happy to be away from danger.

From the first day we arrived, I have felt very settled and welcomed here. I got a job and enrolled in an English program. We learned about finding jobs and resources in British Columbia. Now, I have been here for nine years and in conclusion, I am proud of being in Canada and would like to become a citizen.
