Winter 2015

Activity

Over the past couple of years, pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports in North America among people of all ages. Pickleball was created in 1965, and as I like to say, “If ping-pong and tennis had a kid it would be Pickleball”. It was during the winter of 2022 when I started playing this wonderful sport. I haven’t been able to stop playing since.

This sport can be played indoors or outdoors on a pickleball court, which is basically a small tennis court, with two players (singles) or four players (doubles). The players hit a perforated hollow plastic ball over a 36-inch-high net using solid-faced paddles. The first side to score eleven points wins the match. Players earn points each time their opponent doesn’t return the ball, or hits the ball out of bounds.

Pickleball is a fun, fast paced, low impact game that keeps people active and healthy. When I started, most players were seniors, but this sport has since grown in popularity and now you often see kids playing too.

Because of playing regularly, watching videos and getting advice from more advanced players, I have been able to rapidly improve my game. I've noticed that people who have played other racquet sports such as tennis or ping-pong pick up the game easily.

I've become addicted to playing pickleball, and can’t wait for the outdoor courts to open, so I can start playing outside in the fresh air under the open sky. At the club I'm a member of, you'll find friendly people who are very enthusiastic about the game and make playing it fun and rewarding.
