Education

The education system of my country Eritrea is similar to other countries. When I compare the education system in Eritrea with other countries, there are a lot of differences and similarities. The similarities are that the school starts at the same age in Kindergarten, after that the students are going to the Elementary School from Grade 1 to Grade 5, then they pass through the Junior School from Grade 6 to Grade 8. Next, they continue to High School from Grade 9 to Grade 11.

The difference from the Canadian Education system is that in Eritrea, there is a yearly payment fee from Kindergarten to Grade 12, and also the students have to buy the textbooks and notebooks by themselves, but in Canada, the education from Kindergarten to Grade 12 is for free and there is no payment at all. Another difference is that we take a general exam in Grade 8 in Eritrea. In Grade 12, all Eritrean students go to Sawa. Sawa means an educational institution where all the students are learning together and are also taking part in the military services. Those students who are able to get good marks in the exams, they go to universities or colleges while the rest go the military school.
