I started to volunteer last June at the Heritage Festival for our church St. Dimitrije in Windsor. One of my friends from the church approached me and asked me for help. I helped in the kitchen. That is now my ongoing volunteering position. In our Church Community Centre, we celebrate many festivals and fundraising, promote our culture and these events are all family friendly. This is also the reason why they need many volunteers.
Whenever we celebrate a saint or have service in our church, we have a meal served in our community hall. My usual job in the kitchen is to prepare apple turnovers or desserts. Sometimes I'm also peeling the potatoes. I am in the group of volunteers who come the day before the event to prepare everything, so that the other group of volunteers who comes on the day of the event can just bake and serve everything.
I mostly work with the same women every time. In addition to the work we do, we also have lots of fun. We are speaking in our native language and listening to the old women, who have been here in Canada for more than 50 years, as they talk about their old days when they came here. I really like the spirit of our community.
