Have you ever thought about visiting a place where the sea meets the sky? Strathcona is a truly unique region of Vancouver Island, offering visitors a chance to experience the beauty of coastal nature. There are a wide variety of amazing outdoor activities that tourist can enjoy including fishing, hiking and sea creature watching.
One of the most popular activities enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike is fishing. With a thriving salmon population, Strathcona is one of the best sports fishing spots in world. Not only chinook, but also coho, sockeye and pink salmon can be caught in the area. Both trolling and casting methods can be used, depending on personal preference. During the spawning season, it is also possible to fish for all of these types of salmon in the local rivers. The best time to fish for freshwater chinook salmon is in late August to November; for Coho it is October to December, and for steelhead it is December to April.
Another popular activity is hiking. It is one of the best ways to see the area. Strathcona offers a variety of scenic hiking trails for outdoor enthusiasts. There are trails for everyone. For example, routes providing breathtaking views of the mountains and ocean and paths that provide hikers a chance to observe salmon as they swim upstream to spawn. The Campbell River Estuary Walk is a leisurely hike that takes you along the shore of the estuary, where the river meets the sea. Hikers can enjoy the beauty of various bird habitats on these trails.
In addition to fishing and hiking, visitors often enjoy sea creature watching. Strathcona is a hub for marine life and offers a unique opportunity to observe various sea creatures in their natural habitat. Because it is located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Strathcona is an ideal location for whale watching as they tend to head to this area during their annual migration. Other sea animals such as playful sea otters, and harbour seals can be seen lounging in the surrounding waterways. If you like to snorkel or dive you might just see Nudibranchs (colourful sea slugs), Giant Pacific Octopus, Sea Lions, Giant Plumose Anemones, and more.
