Some people believe that Art gives our lives meaning and purpose. Others believe that it is merely a distraction from real life.
So, does art allow us to escape from the world or to look at it better?
It is simple to say that art is only entertainment. It is true that it is a real pleasure to go to the cinema, a concert, or an exhibition. Indeed, we are transported to another world, another universe. However, it is not because there is a real market for cultural leisure that we must conclude that art, like other leisure activities, is mere entertainment. Indeed, the entertaining aspect of art is not its only definition. It brings knowledge, dreams, emotion
Art liberates us, it allows the escape from everyday life, and diverts us from ourselves. It distracts us by making us forget the sad reality. People therefore need art because it allows us to entertain ourselves, to believe in certain happiness, to taste pleasures that distract us from everyday reality.
Sometimes art upsets us, shakes us up in our habits. In addition to being entertaining , it can therefore be disturbing.
But art is not essentially entertainment, art is not what is pleasant to hear or look at.
