In the first winter after immigration to Canada, my family and I were living in PEI. Compared with beautiful, peaceful and cool summers the winter in PEI is relatively wild and severe. Almost everyday there were strong freezing winds. I was not able to walk outside for more than 15 minutes. Sometimes it was even hard to stand right, and my face felt pain when exposed to the cold wind. I was born in the north-east of China with almost the same latitude as PEI. So it’s not a big problem for me. However, some friends who immigrated here from south of China were a little bit frustrated when they spent their first winter in PEI.
In some cases, it is very dangerous in the winter in PEI. One day, my car was parked quite far. Everybody had gone, and the building was closed. I forgot my phone in my car. When I took out the key and tried to open my car, the key suddenly dropped to the ground and rolled under the car. It took me quite a while to find the key. At that time I realized if I failed to find the key, I might die because it was so cold that I would be frozen if being outside more than 15 minutes, there were no other people around me, and I had no phone with me to call help. After that, I was very careful in the winter.
Although the winter in PEI was not easy, there were still lots of fun. The kids liked to play in the snow very much. Sometimes there was all-night snow and strong wind. In the morning, I found the snow could accumulate to 3 to 4 feet high. Kids could dig caves in the snow, or make a tunnel to the neighbour. There was a big slope behind our house. It was a good place to snowboard. Kids can always find an exciting way to play in the snow.
