I think being a parent requires a lot of responsibility.
Before I had a son, everything in my life was really about me. I went to work, traveled with friends and spent time doing the things I wanted to do. However, after having my son, I quit my job, took care of my son and didn’t have many meetups with friends anymore. Being a mom was something I had never experienced before; I felt very clumsy and found it very difficult. However, when my son first called me mom, I was deeply touched and forgot all about the hard times. Now, through my child, I am learning more about patience and love; my son makes me happy every.
When a child is young, they need parental care, but these days I think my child is taking care of me! It seems that the most difficult thing in an immigrant’s life is language; my son is wonderful at translating things into English for me. He has also been teaching me words and phrases that only Canadians use. In the future, I know I may continue to need help from my son, but I always work hard to prevent that from happening.
My parents have emphasized responsibility and integrity since I was a child, so I think I am more responsible and sincere than many others. Just as my parents taught me, I also teach my son about responsibility and integrity. I am sure someday my son will appreciate this teaching and consider it a strength, just like I am grateful to my parents now for passing it on to me.
Parents sacrifice many things for their children, but the sacrifices are nothing compared to the happiness they give. I learn more and more from my son each day and it helps me to live with gratitude every day.
