In my opinion the distance education like everything has its own pros and cons.
The advantages are:
An option to learn at your own pace
combined with a family life, saves time for commuting
Freedom to take courses from anywhere in the world
Some courses call for a great deal of interaction and cooperation, that encourages you to stay focused and self disciplined
The disadvantages are:
Requires high motivation and discipline, some persons might get distracted and side-tracked
Requires strong and reliable technology such an internet connection and a computer
Some people may find it dismal and depressing
I think the difficulties the teacher may have in delivering a distance education course are variable and depend on the age and level of the student.
Technical difficulties and problems
Difficulties with organizing the time correctly
Keeping the students motivated and interested
Distraction problems, missing a quiet and dedicated place
Dealing with students who need additional support is more difficult when online
