My Story text

Dear Reader,

I was born in a small village in the western part of Eritrea called Dekishihay from a poor farmer family. When I got to the age of seven, I started looking after goats and cattle. At the age of ten, my parents decided to send me to school and they looked after the animals we had. As the result of all the sacrifices they did, I graduated from polytechnic and earned a diploma in surveying in 2004. A month after my graduation, I found a job and my parents were excited. It didn’t take a long time for the government forces to take me from my work place and send me to jail. The jail was an open compound full of people from different back grounds including foreigners with armed military soldiers on all sides. The soldiers who were on the sides of the compound shot with fire guns towards us and many were killed and wounded by the direct shot. Since then, I decided to leave the country.

In September 2005, I flew to Sudan. The life in Sudan was extremely hard for me with a lack of language, religious limitations and other restrictions. The Sudanese were very nice people who practice “ TEFEDL” for everybody. After the religious prayer, they eat in the streets and invite any pedestrians who pass by saying “TEFEDL”. Tefedel means to socialize, eat and drink with me in Arabic. After two years in Sudan, I went to Angola. Angola is a country in the southern part of Africa with a population of 30.8 million who use Portuguese as the main language. From the experience I had, life in Angola was not difficult, but in Angola crime is very high so that minded me to uproot to Canada as my final destination.

On May 24,2018, I arrived in Canada. I have lived in Canada since then and Canada is a country with the nearest territory to the North Pole. Its population is 37.5 million with English and French as the main languages. The phenomenal community behaviors are sympathetic, politeness, supportive and apologetic. In Canada, there is personal freedom to speak and write which I have never seen in all the countries I have crossed. Dear Reader, Canada is a country of opportunity, success and freedom.
