I am writing about the first potluck that I attended when I was new to Canada. It was with my English class, and something very different from what I was used to doing. A month after I started the class, my teacher told my classmates and I about the potluck. She asked us to each bring a different kind of food the next day. I thought about not going because it was strange to me, but when I arrived I was happily surprised! Since the class was mixed with people from many countries, everyone brought different ethnic food and they attended with enthusiasm. There was Russian, Iranian, Syrian, Chinese, Canadian, and Somali food. There were many dishes, including sweet and salty snacks and some juices, and everyone was explaining about their food and inviting us to taste it. We were all very amused. Our English was not good but we tried to explain about our country, food, holidays, languages, and certainly we spoke a lot about recipes. We were all speaking English and the teacher was correcting our mistakes. Everyone participated in the conversation and we learned a lot about different cultures. I even took some pictures of the memory. We had fun! It was such a wonderful time!
