When you miss your home country, eating your home country’s traditional food can make you feel closer. The flavours and smells can transport you thousands of miles and make you feel as though you are back home with your people.

Today, I baked a Mexican bread recipe and I’d like to share the experience with you. I made this food in the company of my family on video chat; my girlfriend and her family baked it in Mexico, and I made it here in Canada at the same time.

We each went to the store to buy all the ingredients and the first major difference was the cost of the ingredients. My girlfriend and her family paid 100 pesos for everything. That is around 8 dollars. I paid 60 dollars for the same ingredients here in Canada! The second major difference was the temperature of the weather. Here, in the Yukon, the temperature is around 2 degrees today and my yeast didn’t puff up. Of course, I read the instructions again and discovered that a super important detail when making your bread is to make it on a warm day (those little black letters in your recipe are important to read)!

My family in Mexico was happy because their yeast puffed up. They tried to cheer me up because my yeast was still flat. Oh well. I kept trying to make my Mexican bread and at the end I got delicious Mexican cookies instead, which were just as tasty!

I decide to share this experience with you to remind you that we can still have our family close to us when we decided to spend our days together, no matter the distance.
