Glossary

Here is some vocabulary from this edition. Do you know what the words mean?

archipelago
a group of small islands

atonement
something you do to show that you are sorry for having done something wrong

authentic
done or made in the traditional or original way

belay
to make someone who is climbing a mountain etc safe by attaching a rope to them and to a rock

choir
 a group of people who sing together for other people to listen to

commemorate
to do something to show that you remember and respect someone important or an important event in the past

confiscate
to officially take private property away from someone, usually as a punishment

contestant
someone who competes in a contest

DIY
do it yourself

durable
staying in good condition for a long time, even if used a lot

gondola
the enclosed part of a cable car where the passengers sit

hollow
having an empty space inside

hub
the central and most important part of an area, system, activity etc, which all the other parts are connected to

innovative
idea or way of doing something is new, different, and better than those that existed before

litter
waste paper, cans etc that people have thrown away and left on the ground in a public place

lumberjack
someone whose job is cutting down trees for wood

meditate
to spend time sitting in a silent calm state, in order to relax completely or for religious purposes

metropolitan
relating or belonging to a very large city

newlyweds
a couple who have recently married

obey
to do what someone in authority tells you to do, or what a law or rule says you must do

parade
a public celebration when musical bands, brightly decorated vehicles etc move down the street

perforated
something that has a hole or holes cut or torn in it

populous
an area that has a large population in relation to its size

solemn
very serious and not happy

souvenir
an object that you buy or keep to remind yourself of a special occasion or a place you have visited

tidy
neat and clean

tomb
a stone structure above or below the ground where a dead person is buried

vigil
a period of time, especially during the night, when you stay awake in order to pray, remain with someone who is ill, or watch for danger

vintage
old, but high quality
