I would like to write about the importance of volunteering as a newcomer to Canada. When someone arrives in Canada, it is essential to connect with their community to facilitate integration and share experiences. Being part of a community means supporting it and, whenever possible, investing time in it. Volunteering is one of the best ways to contribute to your community, connect with others, gain experience, learn about others and help those in need.
There are skills that you need to be a volunteer. Both hard and soft skills are equally important. For soft skills, punctuality, organizational skills, and strong communication are essential. Good communication demonstrates the ability to express oneself and engage in meaningful conversations with others.
Volunteering is a great way to build a network, understand community needs, and dedicate time to others. Research also suggests that volunteering positively impacts well-being. It provides opportunities to socialize, make new friends, and stay engaged with the community.
When I arrived in Canada in 2020, volunteering with the newcomers' association helped me connect with people, make new friends, and overcome feelings of isolation. This experience played a crucial role in maintaining my mental well-being.
I highly recommend volunteering because it not only supports the community but also enhances personal well-being. Furthermore, you learn about the needs of the community and you also gain valuable “Canadian” experience.
