This year from January 13th to February 11th, my home country Cote D’Ivoire hosted the 2023 AFCON stands for Africa Cup of Nations Football. AFCON is held every two years, in a different country regarding infrastructures and whether countries meet CAF (the governing body of African football) standards or not.

There are 24 teams now, from east to west passing through the north and the south, which come to play after qualifiers all years long. It has always been a huge festivity because there exists rivalries between countries like Nigeria and Ghana, Morrocco and Algeria and Cote d’Ivoire and Mali. People come from all around Africa to be part of the party and show support for their national team.

Historically Egypt is the nation with most titles, with three titles in a row lately. Cameroon comes second and Ghana comes third. In this competition, people discover new talents that they have never seen before. AFCON is regarded as a mirror for these talents to show off before some recruiters from world’s big clubs in Europe. Some players who were born abroad decline African international call, but when they come, they notice it is a blessing in disguise. They receive offers from big clubs thanks to AFCON.

In summary, AFCON has always been a big tournament and you can’t turn around without seeing a flag during this period.
