Sri Lanka, popularly known as “The Pearl of The Indian Ocean, is an island country located to the south of the Indian Peninsula in the Indian Ocean and has an area of 65,610 sq. km. Full of romantic landscapes, stirring mountains, lush green tea gardens and golden beaches, the island nation of Sri Lanka is nothing short of magnificent. The Sinharaja rain forest is in Sri Lanka, and it is a world heritage.

This beautiful island nation is currently experiencing a severe political and economic crisis sparking nationwide protests. The hashtag #GohomeGota has been used by Sri Lankans to call for the president's resignation. After 90 days of difficult protests, the former president of Sri Lanka resigned. The government was wholly corrupt, one family had controlled the top positions for many years, and there weren't enough foreign exchange reserves to cover the country's 2022 foreign debt.

Budget cuts made by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had an impact on the government revenue. Tourism is the main economic driver in Sri Lanka. The 2019 Easter bombing, and the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the tourism industry. Gotabaya Rajapaksha announced that the country would only permit organic farming and forbid the use of inorganic fertilizers and chemicals in our agriculture. This had a severe impact on the agriculture sector.

It is believed that the situation was worsened by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Because the majority of visitors come from Russia and Ukraine, Russia is the second-largest exporter of tea, and Sri Lanka's tourism industry is also impacted by constant protests.

The former president has since resigned and left the nation. Ranil Wickramasinghe, the country's prime minister, was chosen following votes in the parliament of Sri Lanka. Citizens continue to protest because they are aware that Wickramasinghe will always put the Rajapaksha family's safety first. The corrupted leaders are still being protested by the people of Sri Lanka.
