My name, Iram, is very special because my grandfather gave it to me. He said that it means “heaven” and it will slowly but surely make all my dreams come true.
My childhood was filled with mostly happy memories, but life is not a bed of roses and there are occasional thorns which we must remove to be fully happy. A difficult phase for me was after graduation from political science when I wanted to become a lawyer. Though my cousins were all lawyers, my parents were strongly against the idea. To make my family happy, I quit my desired field and I got admitted into government funded postgraduate college for women in Lahore, Pakistan and after graduation in 2015, I got admission to Punjab University to do Master’s in Special Education.
Later on in life, I allowed my parents to make another important decision for me. They arranged my marriage to a good man who was a Canadian citizen and we got married in 2017. After one year of marriage, I came to Canada with my husband and we are now living happily in Brampton, ON. Living alone in a new country without family is not easy, but with my husband’s love and care, I’m learning how to be a strong and independent woman. I have made many good friends and I have started my baking & catering business from home. I also got a part-time job in a clinic as a medical office assistant after months of volunteering.
My goals are to complete further studies to become a speech and language therapist. One day with God’s help, I plan to open a homeless shelter for orphaned children in Pakistan because I want my grandfather to be proud of me.
