The best time to fish for freshwater chinook salmon is in late August to November; for Coho it is October to December, and for steelhead it is December to April.

For example, routes providing breathtaking views of the mountains and ocean and paths that provide hikers a chance to observe salmon as they swim upstream to spawn. The Campbell River Estuary Walk is a leisurely hike that takes you along the shore of the estuary, where the river meets the sea. Hikers can enjoy the beauty of various bird habitats on these trails.

In addition to fishing and hiking, visitors often enjoy sea creature watching. Strathcona is a hub for marine life and offers a unique opportunity to observe various sea creatures in their natural habitat. Because it is located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Strathcona is an ideal location for whale watching as they tend to head to this area during their annual migration. Other sea animals such as playful sea otters, and harbour seals can be seen lounging in the surrounding waterways. If you like to snorkel or dive you might just see Nudibranchs (colourful sea slugs), Giant Pacific Octopus, Sea Lions, Giant Plumose Anemones, and more.
