Education

China and Canada

The educational system in China is different from that in Canada when it comes to educational structure. In China, the education system is divided into three years of kindergarten, five or six years of primary school, three or four years of junior middle school (also known as secondary school), and three years of senior middle school (high school). The nine years of primary school and junior middle school in China is compulsory, and all children must complete it at a proper age. It is funded by the government and free for every student.

After completing these years of schooling, students then have the opportunity to continue to higher education. Due to the very limited amount of university spots, there is a lot of pressure on students in high school to ace Gaokao, a three-day national university entrance exam.

In most provinces in Canada, elementary school is from Grade 1 to Grade 8, and secondary school or high school is from Grade 9 to 12. The education from Grade 1 to Grade 12 is free, therefore, free education is longer than that in China. That means Canadians have more opportunities to get higher education than Chinese people. Also in Canada, there's no nation wide entrance test for the university.
