Skiing is a recreation activity, a sport, and a mode of transportation over the snow. Skiing is divided into 2 types: Alpine, that it is characterized by fixed-heel bindings that attach at both the toe and the heel of the skier’s boot, and Nordic style that uses free-heel bindings that attach at the toes of the skier’s boots but not at the heels. In competitions, you also find events such as speed skiing, snowboarding, and freestyle. The word ski comes from the old Norwegian word "skio" which means stick of wood. Skiing has a history of at least eight millennials. The earliest archaeological examples of skis were found in Russia and dated to 6000 BC.

Skiing for the first time is absolutely terrifying! (but really worth it). So, after 3 years of my first attempt, I decided to share this experience with some advice for first-time skiers. I went skiing for the first time with friends during my first winter in Searchmont, Ontario. I had two beginner lessons, skiing 101 for newbies, before heading out onto the big hill with experienced and patient skier, John Wood (the best skiing mentor).

It was an amazing experience full of adrenaline, but before I left, I was really nervous, mostly because I did not have any idea on what to expect, what to wear, or even how to start. There were many things running through my head when I was preparing for my first ski trip. Yes, you should be very excited about this new experience, but also nervous and unsure of exactly what will happen.

If you do not own or lease skis, you will need to rent them from the resort. Usually, all employees are friendly and knowledgeable. They will guide you to choose the best option for you, make sure it fits well on you. They will also help set up the ski bindings to the proper setting based upon your size and ability.

Don't forget to wear warm, insulated, and waterproof clothes. On the mountain, the temperature could drop a few degrees below zero. Being cold is the quickest way to ruin your day, so ski jackets, pants, and gloves are essential. It is important to wear layers under your jacket and pants especially in colder climates. Synthetic material or wool works best.

As a beginner skier, you should wear a helmet and goggles, it will help you to protect your head and clear your vision. Resorts rent these together, it will ensure both fits.

Before you try it first time, follow these tips:

  • Do some research before you depart.
  • Wear ski clothing in layers.
  • Choose the proper equipment.
  • Take some lessons.
  • Don’t give up.

In conclusion, skiing is an incredibly addictive sport and one that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Get fun and don’t overextend yourself.
